I’m a fan of Ariel Lawhon’s writing, so I was thrilled to see that she had a new novel out – this one about the Hindenburg.
Here’s the description via Net Galley:
Description
With everyone on board harboring dark secrets and at least one person determined to make sure the airship doesn’t make the return trip, Flight of Dreams gives an utterly suspenseful, heart-wrenching explanation for one of the most enduring mysteries of the twentieth century—the Hindenburg Disaster.

Well, that synopsis sure isn’t going to give anything away!
FLIGHT OF DREAMS focuses on several different passengers on the Hindenburg – primarily based on real people: a German/Jewish air stewardess (the first ever), the flight navigator, an American with ulterior motives, a family with three children, a young cabin boy. Each one takes the point of view in different chapters, telling the story of the flight, all the while counting down until the time of the disaster.
This was a compelling, almost compulsive, read for me. I couldn’t put it down because I knew what was coming. Oddly enough, I spent the last few months engaged in a stage production of TITANIC. I find the focus on the real people behind these events so fascinating. Also, seeing the excitement of people as they leave on their voyage – yet knowing how tragedy will occur – makes us willing spectators to their grim futures.
While this novel is of course profoundly a tragedy, it is at its heart a story of regular people living their daily lives, and unwittingly becoming part of history. With Ms. Lawhon’s beautiful yet succinct writing, it will be a read you won’t soon forget.
Thank you for my review e-copy!
I almost requested this on Netgalley but decided not to at the last minute. I’m going to go see if it’s still available. Great review!
