If you know me, you know I LOVE MC Beaton’s cozy mysteries with both Hamish Macbeth or Agatha Raisin. I was thrilled to get the latest Hamish Macbeth one from Net Galley (I’ve read them all!).
Here’s what Net Galley has to say:
M. C. Beaton’s New York Times bestselling Hamish Macbeth series continues with a new mystery featuring Scotland’s most quick-witted but unambitious policeman.
James Harrison has recently moved to a restored hunting lodge in Sutherland with his gorgeous private nurse Gloria Dainty. When Hamish visits Mr. Harrison to welcome him to the neighborhood, the old man treats him very rudely. Gloria apologizes for her employer’s behavior, and Hamish takes the plunge and invites her out for dinner. On the appointed evening, Hamish waits for Gloria at the restaurant. And waits. Gloria never shows up. Four days later, Gloria’s body washes up on the beach near Braikie. Now without a date and without his former policeman Dick Fraser (who left the force to buy a bakery), Hamish must find out who killed the beautiful new resident of Sutherland, and why, before the murderer strikes again….
While there has been a few Hamish stories that I have not liked as of late, I really enjoyed this one! Hamish is such a cranky bachelor. He loves his pets and he has the worst luck in his love life. There were little inklings in this story that something may be happening again in the near future with Elspeth (yeah!) and perhaps we will FINALLY find out why Priscilla is so “cold” – what caused it (double yeah!). The cast of characters are familiar and lovable, so this one is a treat for fans familiar with series or for your very first read.
Thank you for my review copy! This book publishes in late February, 2016.
As you know, I love, love, love Hamish Macbeth and MC Beaton’s series of cozies about him. In this latest one, Hamish solves the mysterious death of a woman who first reports her sketchbook missing, then winds up dead. There are lots of suspects but not many motives. Who did she see and why would they feel she was a threat to them? One note to regular readers of this series: Hamish’s love life is again center stage as he struggles with the Priscilla/Elspeth love triangle and a new fling. Personally, I’d like to see him make up his mind! Not my favorite in the series, but a fun, quick read nonetheless. I got my copy from the library!
