Today I’m part of the Bookouture Blog Tour for GONE BY DAWN by H.K. Christie, the first in the Val Costa mystery series. I love a good mystery with a plucky female protagonist. This one takes place in Northern California, too (my hometown area). I liked the pacing in this story and the characters, though I’m happy it’s part of a series as I want to know more about what happens to Val and her family afterwards!

The Golden Doves by Martha Hall Kelly

One of my summer goals was to go through my kindle (which has over 500 books) and find books that I had meant to read but hadn’t gotten to yet. I came across this one and thought “What???” Martha Hall Kelly’s Lilac Girls was a favorite read of mine, so clearly I had gotten distracted and overlooked this novel which follows two female spies after WWII as they seek a Nazi doctor in hiding and the missing son of one of them. Such a good story and such great characters. Reading about the atrocities of the concentration camps is disturbing, but knowing that people risked their lives to bring those running them to justice is so inspiring. While this book is historical fiction, it is based on real events, primarily concerning the women’s camp at Ravensbrück. It is also a testament to women’s friendships and loyalty and maternal love.

Highly recommended!

So if you know me, you know I am half Irish and I love love love Ireland! It is such a beautiful country with lovely people. Many years ago, after a difficult break up, I went to Ireland and found some healing there, so I could relate to Erin. And as Erin’s great-grandmother came over from Ireland, so did my great-grandparents, but mine came after the Famine. I loved this story and I loved the “toggle” between Nellie’s story (which is a sad one – but not too sad!) and Erin’s. It reminded me a bit of one of my favorite Irish authors, Maeve Binchy.

Nothing says summer like a suspenseful read you can’t put down! This was a great read and I kept thinking how it’d make a super engaging limited series on Netflix. It felt a bit like a Harlan Coben mystery. It kept me up for two nights until I finished it. I did like the ending as well!

I somehow overlooked this title in my Net Galley list, but I’m SO glad I discovered it! I loved this story of a group of women who, over many years, are connected by their love and dedication to a garden on an English estate. Such a lovely story and such memorable characters! I love Julia Kelly’s writing; this story reminded me of another beloved author: Kate Morton. If you enjoy this type of historical fiction, don’t miss it!

For My Ears: Homecoming by Kate Morton with Claire Foy as Narrator

I LOVE Kate Morton’s books and I was excited to listen to this one for my final days on the interminable commute. It was SO GOOD! I love the mystery behind it and Ms. Morton’s amazingly beautiful and evocative writing. This was a sad story, but a good one. Fun fact: I was part of a Harper-Collins survey group that voted for the cover for this title and this was the cover I chose. It is so beautiful!

I should add that the narration of this title was just wonderful. The story takes place in Australia and centers on a family that is found deceased on Christmas and the many pieces of that puzzle from the past, along with the current, and the house where it all happened.

I got mine with an Audible credit. If you love Kate Morton, this one will not disappoint!

I love J. Courtney Sullivan’s beautiful writing, so I was excited to get The Cliffs to read and review. This was a totally engrossing story, part a ghost story, part a story of a woman’s life and her connection to an old house in the town where she grew up. It seems it has been chosen for Reese’s Book Club, so I’m sure you will hear more about this title. I loved it, though, and couldn’t put it down!

HTP Blog Tour for BEYOND SUMMERLAND by Jenny Lecoat

I’m taking part today in the blog tour for Beyond Summerland, an engaging and somewhat intense read of post-WWII. Jean’s father has been arrested for owning (and using) a radio during German occupation in the Channel Islands, and she is trying to keep her and her mother’s life together while they search for where he might be. This is complicated by secrets that more than one person are trying to keep. This is a memorable read and beautifully written. Lecoat’s writing is wonderfully evocative of time and place. I had read her first novel The Girl from the Channel Islands in 2021.

Finding Margaret Fuller by Allison Pataki

I loved Pataki’s The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post, so I could NOT WAIT to read her novel of Margaret Fuller, one of my heroes! This was a wonderful depiction of the brilliant Margaret: driven, ambitious, brilliant, and beloved. It is heart-breaking and chock full of details and depictions from the real life of Fuller. Margaret Fuller is not as widely known as her colleagues, the Concord authors Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, and Alcott, but she should be. Don’t miss this wonderful historical fiction depiction of Fuller, which makes her come to life.

Oh I loved this story, which I listened to while driving, and the various characters in it. It is so memorable! It’s the heyday of Hollywood, the story of a rags-to-riches actress, with a love story that runs throughout. It’s historical, yet current. So much dialogue and yet beautifully written, it’s one I won’t soon forget.

I got mine via Audible. As I listened I thought it would make a great movie or limited series and I hear it will be – on Netflix!
