Gone by Dawn by H. K. Christie

Today I’m part of the Bookouture Blog Tour for GONE BY DAWN by H.K. Christie, the first in the Val Costa mystery series. I love a good mystery with a plucky female protagonist. This one takes place in Northern California, too (my hometown area). I liked the pacing in this story and the characters, though I’m happy it’s part of a series as I want to know more about what happens to Val and her family afterwards!

Thank you for my copy and for making me part of the tour!

You kissed your daughter goodnight. By morning, she’s gone.

Two days ago, FBI Agent Val Costa came face to face with a serial killer known as the Bear. One of only two women ever to survive, she’s forever branded with his signature: a curling “S” carved into her skin. Val knows it’s only a matter of time before he takes another victim.

Forced home to recover, Val returns to Red Rose County, California, to be with her son. But the very next day she finds the close-knit community panic-stricken over the disappearance of blonde-haired, freckled-faced local teen, Scarlett Douglas.
Defying orders, Val interviews the Douglas family at their farmhouse and uncovers a less-than-idyllic picture. Housebound since a devastating diagnosis, Scarlett’s world was crumbling. The sight of Scarlett’s unworn prom dress hanging in her room brings a tear to Val’s eye. She won’t sleep until this sweet girl is home and safe.

Val and her team search the nearby towering redwoods for any clue to what happened the morning Scarlett disappeared. But the case takes a sinister turn when a little pink teddy bear is delivered to Val’s door. Did the Bear follow her to Red Rose County? Is her family now in terrible danger? Could Scarlett be his latest victim?

Working around the clock, Val begins to question if the Douglases are the loving parents they claim to be. With time running out to save Scarlett’s life, and the truth just within her reach, will Val once again come face to face with the Bear? And whoif anyonewill survive?

A totally addictive and pulse-pounding crime thriller for fans of Lisa Regan, Mary Stone and Willow Rose. You won’t be able to put this page-turner down!

SILENCE by Julia Park Tracey

I’m shouting it out about this novel, which I’m currently reading and which is publishing later in September. Have it on your radar if you like realistic historical fiction from the colonial era.

Here’s the scoop:

“I am no witch, nor adulteress, thief, nor murderer. They say I have lost my reason, but I know only that my heart is shattered, and in crying it aloud, now I must pay the cost….”

After three grievous losses, Puritan woman Silence Marsh dares to question God aloud in the church, and that blasphemy lands her in trouble—she is silenced for a year by the powers that be. Broken in heart and spirit, Silence learns to mime and sign, but it isn’t until a new Boston doctor, the dashing Daniel Greenleaf, comes to her backward Cape Cod village that she begins to hope again. Rather than treating Silence with bleeding or leeches, Dr. Greenleaf prescribes fresh air, St. John’s Wort, long walks—and reading.

Silence has half a hope of getting through her year of punishment when the cry of witchcraft poisons the village. Colonial Massachusetts is still reeling from the Salem Witch Trials just 20 years before. Now, after demanding her silence, she is called to witness at a witchcraft trial—or be accused herself.

A whiff of sulfur and witchcraft shadows this literary Puritan tale of loss and redemption, based on the author’s own ancestor, her seventh great-grandmother.

Me again! If you know me, you know I live in Massachusetts and am greatly interested in the Puritan years and the witch trials. This is a well-crafted story with a fascinating main character, based on the author’s ancestor.

About the Author

Author Julia Park Tracey’s ancestors and their stories have given her a trail to follow from New York and New England to the deep south and the Pacific Coast. The Bereaved: A Novel, the story of her great great grandmother’s loss of her children to the Orphan Train was named in the top 100 indie books published in 2023 by Kirkus Reviews. Christian Kiefer, author of the newly released The Heart of it All, said: “In The Bereaved, Julia Park Tracey reopens America’s wounds in prose that is propulsive and resonant. Theodore Dreiser comes to mind, but so, too, the fine contemporary novels of Jo Baker and Maggie O’Farrell.”

Thank you to my friends at Sibylline Press for my copy! I will need to find Julia Park Tracey’s earlier novel to read, too!

Harper-Collins Blog Tour for THE GHOST CAT by Alex Howard

This was a fun one to read – part fantasy/part historical time travel/part animal story/part supernatural ghost story. We follow the “ghost cat” through his nine lives, over time, in Scotland. It was fun to read and think about and I loved the ending. I don’t know Alex Howard from Tik Tok, but I’ll have to look him up! This book is on the shorter side, less than 300 pages, so you can get through it quickly.

Thank you for having me as part of the tour!

Bookouture Blog Tour for AN IRISH BOOKSHOP MURDER by Lucy Connelly

I am always SO EXCITED to be in on the first of a series and this cozy mystery was such a great reading experience! Mercy and her twin sister Lizzie inherit a bookstore in Ireland and have hardly arrived in town when a local judge dies unexpectedly. And he’s just the first! One thing I loved about this book was that the characters had such rich development and complete backstories. It did not feel like the first in a series at all. I loved the bond between the sisters and, like all good cozies, I was guessing, gasping, and laughing while reading!

Thank you so much for my copy and for making me part of the tour! And — I’ve just signed up to receive the second installment when it publishes and to do the blog tour in the fall. Yay!

Meet Ireland’s newest daring detective: she’s a bookstore owner, a coffee lover, and a crime writer. Now Mercy McCarthy needs a little Irish luck as she takes on her first case!

After receiving unexpected inheritance from her grandfather, Mercy and her twin sister Lizzie are now the proud owners of a charming antique bookshop in the tiny Irish village of Shamrock Cove. But before they can take in the beautiful view of the sea, one of their neighbors drops dead!

Mercy finds the Judge, a well-respected man who lives next door, dying on his own doorstep. She rushes to help, but with his final words, he accuses Mercy of murder! Most of their new neighbors hear his words and, with suspicion pointing at Mercy, she decides to investigate the case to clear her name.

Searching amongst the Judge’s old books, Mercy uncovers letters proving several of the townsfolk had reason to dislike the older man—but was it the local pub landlord, the kindly cook or neighborly knitter who killed him?

Then Mercy’s chief suspect turns up dead and she receives a threatening note, typed on paper from her own bookstore… Ireland was supposed to be a fresh start for Mercy and Lizzie, but dead bodies keep turning up.

Does Mercy have what it takes to nail the culprit or will the killer close the book on her time in this charming Irish village?

Readers who love Agatha Christie, Carlene O’Connor or Faith Martin, you’ve found your newest cozy crime addiction! An incredibly fast-paced and funny whodunnit that will sweep you away to Ireland and keep you zipping through until you reach the very last page.

The Golden Doves by Martha Hall Kelly

One of my summer goals was to go through my kindle (which has over 500 books) and find books that I had meant to read but hadn’t gotten to yet. I came across this one and thought “What???” Martha Hall Kelly’s Lilac Girls was a favorite read of mine, so clearly I had gotten distracted and overlooked this novel which follows two female spies after WWII as they seek a Nazi doctor in hiding and the missing son of one of them. Such a good story and such great characters. Reading about the atrocities of the concentration camps is disturbing, but knowing that people risked their lives to bring those running them to justice is so inspiring. While this book is historical fiction, it is based on real events, primarily concerning the women’s camp at Ravensbrück. It is also a testament to women’s friendships and loyalty and maternal love.

Highly recommended!

Description

Two female spies risk everything to hunt down an infamous Nazi in this sweeping, profound tale of bravery from the bestselling author of Lilac Girls.

“A riveting story of two brave and amazing women who work in the French resistance during World War II . . . a triumph!”—Lisa Scottoline, New York Times bestselling author of Eternal

American Josie Anderson and Parisian Arlette LaRue are thrilled to be working in the French resistance, stealing so many Nazi secrets that they become known as the Golden Doves, renowned across France and hunted by the Gestapo. Their courage will cost them everything. When they are finally arrested and taken to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, along with their loved ones, a reclusive Nazi doctor does unspeakable things to Josie’s mother, a celebrated Jewish singer who joined her daughter in Paris when the world seemed bright. And Arlette’s son is stolen from her, never to be seen again.

A decade later the Doves fall headlong into a dangerous dual mission: Josie is working for U.S. Army Intelligence and accepts an assignment to hunt down the infamous doctor, while a mysterious man tells Arlette he may have found her son. The Golden Doves embark on a quest across Europe and ultimately to French Guiana, discovering a web of terrible secrets, and must put themselves in grave danger to finally secure justice and protect the ones they love.

Martha Hall Kelly has garnered acclaim for her stunning combination of empathy and research into the stories of women throughout history and for exploring the terrors of Ravensbrück. With The Golden Doves, she has crafted an unforgettable story about the fates of Nazi fugitives in the wake of World War II—and the unsung female spies who risked it all to bring them to justice.

1666 by Lora Chilton

I’m shouting it out today for this interesting, well-written novel about two indigenous women from early colonial times in America. It’s from one of my favorite publishers: Sibylline Press (they only publish women authors over 50!).

Here’s the scoop:

The Survival Story of the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia told through the lives of two women

The survival story of the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia has been remembered within the tribe for generations, but the massacre of Patawomeck men and the enslavement of women and children by land hungry colonists in 1666 has been mostly unknown outside of the tribe until now. Author Lora Chilton, a member of the tribe through the lineage of her father, has created this powerful fictional retelling.

Told in first person point of view through the imagined lives of two women, Chilton tells the harrowing stories of Ah’SaWei WaTaPaAnTam (Golden Fawn) and NePa’WeXo (Shining Moon), members of the surviving Patawomeck tribe, who after the slaughter of their men were sold and transported to Barbados via slave ship. Separated and bought by different sugar plantations, they endured, each plotting their escapes before finally making their way back to Virginia to be reunited with the few members of the tribe that remained.

About the Author:

A member of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia, Lora Chilton tells the story of her people and their unlikely survival due to the courage of three Patawomeck women. As a part of the process, she interviewed tribal elders, researched colonial documents and studied the Patawomeck language. Chilton graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She has worked as a Registered Nurse, a small business owner, an elected official, a non-profit executive and a writer. Memphis is her home. 1666: After the Massacre is her second work of historical fiction.

Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate

I loved Lisa Wingate’s Before We Were Yours, so I was excited to receive this as an ARC through Net Galley. Why have I not heard more about this novel? It was SO good and so interesting (disturbing, yet interesting). By chance I happened to watch the film Killers of the Flower Moon (which I had read when it came out) on a flight in June, and it ties into this story as well.

Here’s the overview:

Description

USA TODAY AND PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BESTSELLER • “Wingate’s stellar latest explores a centuries-long legacy of missing child cases. . . . Her portrayal of the region’s history, culture, and landscape enthralls. Wingate is at the top of her game.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours comes “a sweeping tale about little known history” (People): the women pioneers who fought to protect children caught in the storm of land barons hungry for power and oil wealth.

1909. Eleven-year-old Olive Augusta Radley knows that her stepfather doesn’t have good intentions toward the two Choctaw girls boarded in their home as wards. When the older girl disappears, Ollie flees to the woods, taking six-year-old Nessa with her. Together they begin a perilous journey to the remote Winding Stair Mountains, the notorious territory of outlaws, treasure hunters, and desperate men. Along the way, Ollie and Nessa form an unlikely band with others like themselves, struggling to stay one step ahead of those who seek to exploit them . . . or worse.

1990. Law enforcement ranger Valerie Boren-Odell arrives at newly minted Horsethief Trail National Park seeking a quiet place to balance a career and single parenthood. But no sooner has Valerie reported for duty than she’s faced with local controversy over the park’s opening, a teenage hiker gone missing from one of the trails, and the long-hidden burial site of three children unearthed in a cave. Val’s quest for the truth wins an ally among the neighboring Choctaw Tribal Police but soon collides with old secrets and the tragic and deadly history of the land itself.

In this emotional and enveloping novel, Lisa Wingate traces the story of children abandoned by the law and the battle to see justice done. Amid times of deep conflict over who owns the land and its riches, Ollie and Val traverse the rugged and beautiful terrain, each leaving behind one life in search of another.

Wow – this was a great book and it is unforgettable due to its great writing and the fact that it is rooted in historical fact. Two thumbs up from me. Highly recommended! Thanks for my copy.

Harper-Collins Blog Tour for THE BODY NEXT DOOR by Maia Chance

If you know me, you know I love a suspenseful thriller that I’m trying to figure out before the end of the story! This novel kept me reading and guessing well into the night. It toggled back and forth in time, giving information from the past that informed the present and dropping clues as to what might have occurred. A commune/cult, a wealthy family, a boy with supernatural powers, a talented musician, everything converges into a final climax that was worth the sleep I lost for it!

Thank you for my copy and for having me as part of the tour!

Overview:

They buried their secrets, but not deep enough…

Hannah McCullough’s life is far from perfect, but you’d never know it by looking at her. Instead, you’d see a beautiful young mother wholly devoted to her two children and a docile wife utterly besotted with her self-made millionaire husband, Allan. You’d see the designer clothes she wears, the luxury car she drives, the dewy-eyed au pair she employs.

You wouldn’t see the dark secret she carries.

But when a construction crew unearths the body of a young girl near the McCulloughs’ vacation home on Orcas Island, Hannah has no choice but to confront her past. She wonders how much Allan knows about the victim and the apocalyptic cult she was connected to. Meanwhile, Allan can’t seem to understand why his beautiful young bride, as polished and pristine as the collectible artifacts in his glass case, would threaten their fairy-tale lifestyle by digging too deep, in places she knows she shouldn’t.

As the police investigation into the gruesome discovery deepens, the facade of Hannah’s picture-perfect marriage starts to crumble, and she soon finds herself on a dire hunt for answers. And Hannah’s search takes an unexpected turn after she crosses paths with three strangers with shocking secrets of their own.

For My Ears: LADY TAN’S CIRCLE OF WOMEN by Lisa See, narrated by Jennifer Lim and Justin Chien

If you follow me, you know I LOVE the writing of Lisa See. I’ve read all her books and Snowflower and the Secret Fan as well as Peony in Love may be two of my favorites of all time. Her writing is so beautiful and so rich in detail that reading her novels is a truly immersive experience.

So – the interminable commute has now become “the big drive”. Yay! I still commute about an hour but that feels so much quicker (um, it is) primarily because I am not stuck in traffic every day. I am driving along a 4 lane highway. Yay!! Thus, I say “bring on the audiobooks!”

This one was a lovely and interesting read and I learned a lot about women doctors and medical practices in China in the Ming dynasty. As always, Lisa See’s writing was eloquent, evocative, and beautiful. The narration was actually soothing as I was driving along and so well done.

Highly recommended! I got mine with my monthly Audible credit!

Here’s the scoop:

According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

From a young age, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses, many of which relate to childbearing, alongside a young midwife-in-training, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose—despite the prohibition that a doctor should never touch blood while a midwife comes in frequent contact with it—and they vow to be forever friends, sharing in each other’s joys and struggles. No mud, no lotus, they tell themselves: from adversity beauty can bloom.

But when Yunxian is sent into an arranged marriage, her mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and from helping the women and girls in the household. Yunxian is to act like a proper wife—embroider bound-foot slippers, recite poetry, give birth to sons, and stay forever within the walls of the family compound, the Garden of Fragrant Delights.

How might a woman like Yunxian break free of these traditions and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five centuries later? How might the power of friendship support or complicate these efforts? A captivating story of women helping each other, Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a triumphant reimagining of the life of one person who was remarkable in the Ming dynasty and would be considered remarkable today.
